ERRORS IN TENSE AND ASPECT SYSTEM: INVESTIGATING WRITTEN EXPRESSION OF COLLEGE UNDERGRADUATES IN QUETTA CITY

Abstract

Committing errors is an integral part of learning. Among many concerns and problems faced by students in English as second language at college level, the Tense and Aspect are two key issues in language teaching and learning. The teachers and the undergraduate students are found to be unaware of the errors in Tense and Aspect system.  The undertaken study focuses on the errors which hinder the way of acquisition of English as a second language of the undergraduate students. The theoretical framework for the study is provided by Dulay, Burt and Krashen (1982) surface strategy taxonomy. The population of the study is provided by the 100 undergraduate students. As data,   two hundred written narrative and descriptive essays, one hundred each, in English Language on specific topic and word count of college undergraduates were taken. Data was analyzed using Descriptive analysis. The results revealed that Addition, Misformation, Misordering and Omission are the most frequent errors committed. The same study could be conducted on university students and school going students using linguistic strategy taxonomy.  Finally, it is recommended    to adopt appropriate strategies for teaching to ameliorate learning.
