Abstract

The purpose of this randomized controlled study was to determine the effect of protective nursing interventions, thematized as education /practices including healthy nutrition and physical activity and motivational messages including sending social media messages for reducing obesity risk on university students at risk. The research was carried out at Faculty of Health Sciences of Selcuk University between March 7 and May 27, 2016. The randomized controlled study group consisted of 70 students were randomly assigned to 35 experiments and 35 control groups. Experiment and control group had similar characteristics. For 11 weeks, interventions of education and practices about eating habits and physical activity, and of motivational messages were applied to the experimental group. No intervention was used for the control group. After the post tests, the training guidelines were distributed to the control group to prevent ethical violations. Data were collected with Nutrition-Exercise Attitude Scale, Nutrition-Exercise Behaviour Scale and Exercise Benefit / Obstacle Scale. For anthropometric measurements, tape measure and tanita were used. Dependent group t test, independent t test and intention to treat (ITT) analysis were used for the analysis of the data. The difference between the experimental group and the control group was statistically significant in terms of nutrition-exercise attitude and nutrition-exercise behaviour scores (p <0,05). The difference between the experimental group and the control group was significant in terms of exercise benefit / disability scale score (p <0,05). In the experimental group, pre-test and post-test were different in terms of BMI and it was found that BMI was decreased after nursing interventions (p <0,05).
